Q
Just wondering what the best way to kill Wintergrass is? I've been applying herbicides but it has no effect on Wintergrass and the problem keeps getting worse every year.
A
Wintergrass needs a special herbicide to kill it, this is why you've had no success so far.
Grab some Wintergrass Killer from the nursery, mix it up in a watering can or spraying bottle, and apply it to the lawn at manufacturers recommendations.
Most importantly - the Wintergrass Killer will need to be watered into the lawn after application. This is because this weed killer works on the roots of Wintergrass, not on the leaf like many other herbicides do.
It's also important to apply the herbicide as soon as possible when the weeds are young. Once Wintergrass matures, it will become very difficult to kill.
Wintergrass Killer can also be applied before the weed is even seen, this is called pre-emergent treatment and has the best success rate of all. If you've had a Wintergrass problem in years past, then you'll have a worse problem this year. Treat pre-emergent by applying the herbicide in May.
Wintergrass gets worse each year because their seeds are so fine and easily dispersed. For this reason, lawn mowing has minor effects in removing the next generation of weed seeds
