Q

I'm about to put down a new lawn at my home and have been considering growing Buffalo grass. Would Buffalo grass be a good lawn lawn choice.

A

There's no doubt about it, the popularity of Buffalo grass has exploded in recent years. A factor which has absolutely nothing to do with the benefits of this Buffalo grass, but instead due entirely to advertising!

Buffalo grass is indeed a good grass, and there are some very good soft ones around right now, but it has to be said that Buffalo is being over-utilised by far too many people right now, and is often being planted in environments where it is entirely inappropriate. Leading many homeowners to experience problems later down the track when the lawn does not perform to standards that they need or expect from a home lawn that will suit their needs. Once again, this over-use of Buffalo grass is due entirely to the heavy advertising of this grass, and for no other reason.

And I've seen a lot of homeowners badly affected by a wrong buying decision when it came to buying a Buffalo lawn instead of a more suitable grass type for their individual needs.

With such results often arising due to homeowners believing advertising which proclaims some grasses to be a perfect lawn for everyone - when the truth is - the very claim is absolutely preposterous, and Buffalo grass has several drawbacks which make the grass unsuitable and undesirable for many people.

Some of these drawbacks including the lack of underground runners which make the grass less resilient, a thatch layer which keeps thickening each year leading the lawn to have a limited lifespan if not properly cared for, intolerance of weed sprays, and a very rapid growth rate for some of the better selling Buffalo types.

It may also be worthwhile considering why almost no governments, councils or any other authority will ever plant Buffalo grass to be used in areas by the general public or in any other areas for that matter…

Don't get me wrong, I'll say it again, Buffalo is a good grass, and worthy of a home lawn, it's just being utilised by too many people when it's not the right grass for them, which then leads to years of ongoing discontent when it is completely unnecessary.

So before buying your new lawn, be sure to do some real independent research into the different lawn types, and especially into the different Buffalo types because there are major differences between the brands, and the lowest maintenance and best quality Buffalo grass may not be the best selling Buffalo grass!

And be sure to buy Buffalo grass only if Buffalo is your preferred lawn type, and be sure to ignore all the advertising spin for Buffalo Grass!
