Q
I'm researching the different lawn varieties and seem to be leaning toward Couch for my new lawn. Is Couch a good lawn type, and what are the disadvantage i should be aware of?
A
Couch most certainly is a very popular lawn variety. This popularity is overwhelmingly due to it's cheap price, which is made possible because it grows so fast on the turf farm.
The advantages of Couch include it's fast growth which allows it to repair very quickly after damage, as well as filling in new areas where we want our lawn to spread to. It has good green colour and a fine leaf which mows very well with a cylinder lawn mower.
The fast growth of Couch also means it may require more frequent lawn mowing, as well as being a notorious for invading surrounding garden beds, pathways and spreading to neighbouring lawns.
It's vigorous growth and invasive properties are also further encouraged and worsened by it's ability to send out it's underground runners (Rhizomes) underneath garden edging and fences to spread to new areas.
These same runners can survive underground for a long time, and will repair a lawn which has otherwise died above the surface, once conditions have again improved.
