Q

Can you tell me what rhizomes and stolons are in lawns, I've been doing a lot of research into lawn types and keep coming across these terms.

A

Rhizomes and Stolons are the names of the runners which occur in many different lawn varieties. These most often occur in Warm Season Grasses but can also be evident in Cool Season or Bunching Grasses.

Rhizomes are underground runners which can be seen in the popular Couch lawn variety, which is a warm season grass, but can also be seen in Rhizomatous Tall Fescue, which is a cool season lawn.

Rhizomes are protected from many of the above ground elements which allows the lawn to be far more robust and recover from damage which occurs above the soil surface. Unfortunately, aggressive species like Couch will use these Rhizomes to travel underground and under garden edging and fences to spread into unwanted areas.

Stolons are the above ground runners which are also in Couch, or can be seen without Rhizomes in a lawn variety such as Buffalo.

Stolons allow the lawn to spread and repair itself from damage or to creep and spread the lawn naturally. Unlike Rhizomes, Stolons will not travel underground.
