Q

I want to buy some Kikuyu to establish my new lawn with, but all I can find is Male Sterile Kikuyu. Can you tell me what it is, is it the same as normal Kikuyu.

A

Male Sterile Kikuyu is just normal Kikuyu grass which has been developed to be sterile. Kikuyu has been a great lawn in Australia but it's also become a real nuisance in waterways and in nature, where Kikuyu is a pretty aggressive weed in these instances. To stop this ongoing escape from our yards into nature, plant breeders have sterilised it as a control measure. The male of the species was simply easier to sterilise.

Have no fear, buy and enjoy your new Male Sterile Kikuyu lawn with confidence.
