Q
My lawn been infested with Sod Webworm, what is the best way to kill the webworms and stop them from attacking my lawn again?
A
Sod webworms are not a worm at all, but are a small brown caterpillar of a moth. Once an infestation begins, they can very quickly grow in numbers and cause massive damage to a lawn as a result of their feeding.
Check for Sod Webworm by going onto the lawn at night time and look for small moths flying around the turf. You can also check between the thatch layer of the lawn at night to try and find these little brown caterpillars as they munch away at the lawn. Finally, you can check for small silky webs across the lawn surface very early in the morning.
Once the diagnosis has been made, it's simply a case of applying an appropriate pesticide to the lawn just before sunset, and then lightly watering the chemical into the turf. As the caterpillars begin to feed on the grass, they ingest the poison and die as a result. For effective and total control, several treatments spread apart may be the ideal solution. Check and follow manufacturers recommendations on the product label.
