Q

Ants are overtaking my lawn in massive numbers, I keep putting down baits and trying everything else I can think of to control the ants in my lawn, all to no avail.

A

Ants can be a real problem for lawn owners, once ants begin to overtake a lawn there really doesn't seem to be too much which can slow down their progression. Instead of taking a one sided approach in the form of chemicals and poisons to control ants, it's far better to take a whole approach, not just by killing ants, but to control their environments so that they naturally control their own numbers too. The next few steps will outline the lawn care tips which will encompass a whole approach to controlling ants in lawns.

The first step is to remove any and all food and water sources possible. This will mean regular cleanup and removal of pet foods, or other food scraps in the outside areas, regularly rake and clean garden beds of decomposing plant matter, and remove any small water traps around the yard which may hold small amounts of water.

Good lawn health is the next step in controlling ants in lawns. By following good lawn care practices, we can naturally increase the health of our lawns that the lawn will develop a strong and healthy sward and thatch layer. Ants simply cannot build nests or live in a lawn which is thick and strong, it becomes a hostile environment for them. So aim to pay attention to the ongoing and overall health of your lawn and ants will simply move on to another more welcoming environment.

Lawn mowing heights should also be increased. Once again, a long leaf and thicker lawn will become an impossible environment for ants to thrive in, and they must move away. Increased lawn mowing heights will also help to reduce and conserve water, as well as providing a lawn which will tolerate drought conditions far more effectively.

Finally, chemical ant poisons can be purchased and applied to all ant infected areas of the lawn. Be vigilant in controlling ants by applying the pesticide regularly at manufacturers recommendations only, and be sure to have a very good hunt around the entire yard to ensure that all ants are being treated at the same time.
