Q
I'm a new lawn owner, and very keen to keep my beautiful new lawn looking at it's best all year round. Does lawn mowing have an impact in lawn care and how often should I mow my new lawn?A
How often you mow your lawn really decides on several factors.
It depends on the time of the year - lawns need more lawn mowing in the Summer, slightly less in Spring and Autumn and less in Winter.
The type of grass is very important when it comes to lawn mowing frequency, Zoysia grass will require the least mowing, a Buffalo grass will require about 40% more mowing than Zoysia, and Kikuyu will require 3 times more mowing than Zoysia.
Finally, lawn mowing regularity depends on whether or not the lawn is receiving adequate water and nutrients.
All these factors combine to determine the growth rate of your lawn, and all lawn mowing should follow the growth rates of the lawn in question, otherwise mowing can damage the lawn with scalping or encourage excessive thatch growth.
So when speaking about healthy Zoysia grass, every 2 weeks in the Summer is best, Buffalo will require mowing every 1-2 weeks in Summer, and Kikuyu will need mowing every 5-7 days.
Mowing for any grass type should not exceed every 4 weeks in the Winter, this will help to control thatch growth and keep the lawn green throughout the Winter.
