Q
I would like to hire a lawn mowing contractor to mow my lawns for me, is it a good idea to get multiple quotes or is this something that contractors frown upon?A
Some lawn mowing contractors may indeed have a problem with clients getting multiple quotes, and that's OK - it lets you know that the contractor in question is not a good choice. It's a very immature attitude on his behalf and it's better to know this before you hire him.
The pricing part of the consideration simply allows the client to get an idea of the general price range involved for servicing their property. But price should never be considered as the only consideration, nor a very important one. For the sake of trying to save $3.00, we may well end up with a contractor we're not going to be happy with.
Also, if it does turn out that the contractor made a mistake when quoting the lawn, and underpriced it by a greater amount, then this also leads to other problems. This occurs when the contractor must eventually either let the underpriced job go, or put up the price for the work.
Most important is to find a lawn mowing contractor who the client feels comfortable with, feels trust with, who operates his business in a professional manner, and who respects and does the right thing by his clients. These are the factors which are most important when hiring a lawn mowing contractor over the long term, any other reasons often lead to problems down the road.
The final piece of advice when hiring a lawn mowing contractor is the most important of all. Make sure the contractor is a registered business, and carries full public liability insurance to protect your property and the people on it, as well as the properties of your neighbours and any other person who could be near the property and possibly be injured during work.
