Q

I've heard that buying locally made fertilisers is as important as buying locally produced food. Meaning the fertiliser has to travel less miles to reach us so therefore must be more environmentally friendly, is this true?

A

The idea about fertiliser miles is exactly the same as food miles. Which is a principle that states that the more locally produced a product, then the better it is for the earth because it requires far less shipping and trucking to take the product to it's final destination than a locally produced item, and this is very true.

The components which make up a bag of simple fertiliser can originate from many different places around the globe. In this respect, there is little we can do about this, no matter where we live in Australia. But as we all become more aware and change our buying habits accordingly, this too will become a major influence we can all make on our fertiliser manufacturers to also source from local origins only.

However, right now - what we can do is to choose to buy fertilisers from our most local manufacturers possible, and this gives benefits to both the environment as well as to the health of our lawns. So let's look at both of these two benefits we can utilise to the greatest benefits possible.

Seriously, why buy a lawn fertiliser on the internet or in the garden shop which is made in NSW, and then trucked all the way across the nation to Perth, to Darwin or to Adelaide. There are even fertilisers made in the USA and shipped across the planet on massive cargo ships. It makes no sense and is a tremendous waste of natural resources. So best to buy from a local manufacturer for these reasons alone!

The second and equally, if not greater reason to buy locally made fertilisers from the same States we live in is because our local fertiliser manufacturers do extensive research into the soil types in our States. In doing so, they discover the exact nutritional makeup of our soils, and create a fertiliser blend which is best suited to our own local conditions, and which is most beneficial to our very own lawns. And this is vital to ensure our lawns are receiving the very best mix of nutrients in all areas in which they may be lacking, and not to receive any extra nutrients which are already present in sufficient quantities in our soil, which would then only run-off into the open environment as waste.
