Q
My lawn mowing contractor has advised me to have my lawn vertimowed, can you tell me what vertimowing is and why I should have it done?A
Vertimowing is when the entire upper thatch layer of a lawn is removed by the use of a special Vertimowing Machine. Vertimowing can only be done on Warm Season grass types, such as Couch, Buffalo, Kikuyu and Queensland Blue.
Vertimowing is done when the thatch layer of a lawn has become very thick over time, and which make the lawn unattractive after mowing, often leaving tram lines, and making the job of lawn mowing very difficult and more time consuming.
Most of todays modern hybrid lawn varieties all have vigorous growth rates and will need to be vertimowed more regularly in oder that they be kept looking their best, and manageable.
If your lawn mowing contractor has recommended the lawn be vertimowed, then he is most likely right, as he will notice at each service that the lawn is becoming increasingly difficult to mow, will notice the lawn sponginess increasing, or to get a good job from. It's probably best to strongly consider his advice, as the problem will only continue to worsen over time if left untreated.
Vertimowing is also called Scarifying and De-Thatching.
