Q
My lawn is not doing so well so I plan to kill it off and plant a new lawn variety from scratch. What's the best way to kill my existing lawn?A
Glyphosate herbicide is the best poison to use to kill your lawn. It is most commonly known as Roundup, but it is also sold under many other different names, they are exactly the same product and you'll save some money choosing an alternative brand. It will also save you a LOT of money to buy a handy sprayer and the concentrated from of Glyphosate.
The glyphosate can easily be mixed up at double the recommended application rates and then sprayed onto the lawn.
Do not spray when rain is likely within 2-3 days or the poison will wash off.
Be VERY CAREFUL not to let the spray drift onto any surrounding plants, as the glyphosate will kill any plant it comes into contact with, so also a good idea not to spray on windy days.
Try to keep people and pets off the treated lawn for around a week. If necessary - do a section at a time and temporarily fence it off.
The lawn should be dead in around 1-2 weeks, check the lawn looking for any regrowth of the lawn and spray again with glyphosate wherever necessary.
Allow a month to properly kill off the lawn.
If the lawn was established for a long time, then it may also be necessary to rotary hoe the soil to break up the old root system and aerate the soil prior to laying the new turf.
